Welcome to Brown Dog Inn, a nature based boutique-style dog retreat nestled within a woodland oasis in beautiful Freeport, Maine.

Founded in 2005, the Inn has evolved over the years into something intentionally different: a calmer, more meaningful approach to dog care inspired by nature, connection, and the Danish concept of hygge (pronounced hoo gah) a feeling of coziness, wellbeing, warmth, and being fully present in the moment.

Dogs understand hygge instinctively.

They know how to slow down, sniff the breeze, stretch in the sunshine, crunch through leaves, lounge after a swim, and appreciate life’s simple pleasures better than any of us. At Brown Dog Inn, we’ve built an entire philosophy around that idea.

Set on 10 private acres of open fields and wooded trails, our grounds are designed for movement, decompression, sensory enrichment, and joy. Here, dogs spend their days exploring nature trails, sniffing through tall grasses, splashing in our famous pool, sunbathing on warm decks, relaxing beneath the trees, enjoying small playgroups thoughtfully matched by temperament and energy, and winding down afterward with cozy Hygge Cuddles and peaceful rest.

We believe exceptional dog care should feel both joyful and deeply reassuring. Our experienced team is Fear Free certified and intentionally hands on in every aspect of care. We take extra time creating balanced social groups, closely monitoring comfort and energy, and getting to know each dog as an individual. We keep our community intentionally small so every guest receives genuine attention, thoughtful care, and meaningful connection throughout their stay.

Over the years, we have been grateful to grow alongside a loyal community of thoughtful pet parents across Maine who believe dogs deserve fresh air, open sky, moments of calm, and the chance to simply be present in nature.

While families are away, they can truly rest easy knowing their dogs are safe, enriched, loved, and cared for as if they were our own.

For humans, it feels wonderfully guilt free.
For dogs, it feels like a vacation in nature.

We’re so glad you found us

XOXO,
